Language Arts for the Week of 11/2/09

November 1st, 2009 by ERIC HADDEN

This week in Mr. Hadden’s Language Arts class, we will be covering Mastering Vocabulary Word Parts Unit #4.  These word parts help our students to decode words that they may not know by teaching them to pull out word parts (prefixes/suffixes) that can help them to determine the meanings of words.  This skill helps in acquiring/developing  new vocabulary.

We will also be taking a look at various sentence pattern formats that can be used to reinforce the use of variety in writing.  In looking at these various patterns, we will be working as a whole class, in small groups, and on our own.

Where Are Report Cards?

October 29th, 2009 by ERIC HADDEN

Last week, report cards were mailed out to parents who had opted to receive a paper copy of the record.  If, by chance, you did not elect to receive a paper copy of the report card, you can view your child’s report card online by following the directions below:

The Online Report Card feature on Skyward Family Access is now available for Quarter 1.  To view the progress report, click on Report Cards tab located on the left side of your screen under General Information.  Click on Quarter 1.  When asked to Open or Save choose Open.  The document will open in Microsoft Word.  At that point you may print or save the document.

If you have any questions about accessing your child’s report card, please contact the Guidance Office at 309-888-6910.

Online Courses Now Available for Mr. Hadden’s Classes

October 25th, 2009 by ERIC HADDEN

Mr. Hadden has set up online course sites for his Language Arts, Lit & Comp, and Math classes.  Students will be receiving logon information this week and be asked to take some time to logon to the CMS (Moodle) site to enroll in his classes.  This will open up opportunities to submit work/projects over the internet, share messages, and gather information about assignments and notes.  This is a new opportunity that is being tried out, much like this blog, to see whether or not students can benefit.  Please keep an eye on the team website, this blog, and your email for more information about the happenings at KJHS.

UPDATE: — Login information can be found here.

Language Arts for the Week of 10/26/09

October 25th, 2009 by ERIC HADDEN

This week, in Mr. Hadden’s Language Arts class, we will be studying Vocabulary Cartoons Unit #3.  We will also be doing some work with pronouns.  We will start off with simple pronouns and antecedents (the nouns that pronouns replace).  Throughout the week, ask your student if they know what their vocabulary cartoon words are.  Can they tell you what they mean and use them appropriately in context?  Try making up some sentences where these words would be used, but leave them out.  Based on the context clues, see if your student can place the right words in those sentences.
